Making potting soil

mhealy1234@ asks:

Question

I bought a manure and humus mix, but need a "moisture retaining potting mix". Can I do add something to the mix I have to turn it into potting soil?

Answer

The humus mix you added will hold moisture quite well however adding some peat moss to the mix will increase the soils water holding capability. The average potting soil is made up of composted plant material (humus), sand, perlite, and peat moss. Some potting soil brands also add vermiculite to increase the soils moisture retention. There are also a number of water crystals and pellets on the market that claim to increase the water holding capacity of soil which reduce watering, many do work however they will not last for long periods of time.
