Wisteria Surface Roots

Kathy asks:

Question

After spring raking, many surface roots were found on top of soil around my wisteria, can I trim them back?

Answer

You could go a head and prune the roots of the wisteria back, they are quite vigorous and resilient plants when healthy. Be sure to make good, clean cuts with a quality pair of pruners. If the roots are small hair roots the exposure to sun and air will most likely prune the roots back without you needing to make any cuts.

An alternative to pruning the roots which would benefit the wisteria vine would be to cover the roots with a good, esthetically pleasing wood chip mulch. You both win!

Thank you very much, so glad I found your sight!
