Oak Seedlings In My Flower Bed

Valerie asks:

Question

I have millions of oak seedlings in my flower beds due to mast crop of acorns this year. Can I elimiate them if I cut the tops off the seedling or will they just grow back? Any other suggestions besides pulling them?

Answer

If the oak seedlings are still very young and have not had a chance to establish then yes cutting the tops of will most likely kill them, however if the plants have a well developed root system already it may not work. Other than pulling them your other option would be some sort of herbicide but depending on what else is growing in the flowerbed this may not be a viable option. Common herbicide applied to the leaves will do the trick.

Good Luck!
