Crown of Thorn Cuttings

Dorothy Doherty asks:

Question

I have some Crown of Thorns in my garden that I would like to cut back but use the cuttings to make new plants, is this possible?

Answer

Yes, its possible and quite common in the trade to propagate Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) by cuttings.

The propagation cutting method:

1) With a sharp knife make cuttings 2-3 inches in length, preferably from younger portions of the plant.
2) Dip the root end in a rooting hormone powder (This step is not completely necessary however it may help the success rate).
3) Place the cuttings in small 1-2 inch pots or rooting trays, use a rooting media that retains moisture but allows for adequate air circulation. Peat Moss or Coconut Coir mixed with Perlite or other similar light porous material works best. The Crown of Thorns cuttings should not touch the bottom of the rooting container but should be stable enough to stand up unassisted.
4) Place cutting is a warm, well lit, well ventilated location. Good air circulation help reduce the chance of fugal disorders.
5) Keep planting media moist throughout the rooting process.
6) Remove any dropped leaves or other liter regularly to avoid contamination from decay.
7) After one month the Euphorbia milii cuttings should be rooted and ready to be transplanted.
