Plant in House Fire

clpardee@ asks:

Question

How can I help house plants that were in a fire? I put them in a well lite room that is 60 degrees. They did not burn but have strong odor, I want to clean them so they smell better and stay healthy.

Answer

I have not come across such a dilemma before, however I think best way to try and remove the smell of fire from your plants would be to make a light solution of soapy water (A few drops of dish soap added to a spray bottle will work) throughly drench the plants and soil. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes before rinsing. This can be done outside or in a shower, repeat as necessary. Once the weather has warmed up take the plants outside and allow them to air out. It may take sometime for the smell to completely go away.

Hope this helps, sorry about the fire!
