Oak Tree Leaves

Tim Lane asks:

Question

I have a Texas red oak with some curled leaves only on new growth, and not all the way around the tree. What are possible causes?

Answer

There could be a few possible causes for the leaf curl you are seeing on your Texas Red Oak; first would be insects, second would be a nutrient deficiency, third some abiotic stress caused by a herbicide or other substance toxic to plants. I have never seen such uniformly rolled leaves. Here are some questions I would ask if I were the arborist onsite inspecting the tree.

If you unroll the leaf is there any white residue, webbing or signs of incests?
Is the rolling uniform throughout the entire canopy?
Is it only on the newest leaves to emerge?
Has this happened in years past?
Are there other Red Oaks in the area that are showing the same symptoms?
