Japanese Maple Tree
Question
When is the best time to prune my Japanese Maple tree?
Answer
The best time to prune a Japanese Maple is in fall and winter months after the tree has dropped it's leaves however pruning can be done throughout the year. Remember never remove more than 25% of a trees foliage in one season and always make proper pruning cuts leaving the branch collar intact. The branch collar is ring of protective cell located at the union of the lateral branch and the trunk (see attached photo). Every time a pruning cut is made the tree is opened to insects and decay, the smaller the cut the better.
