Substitute Plants for Flax

klitzingk@ asks:

Question

What can I substitute New Zealand Flax with in zone 5? I would like something that is controllable.

Answer

There are many different clump forming grasses that can easily be kept in control. Not sure how big your New Zealand Flax is you are replacing but here are a few suggestions.

-Switch grass, (panicum virgatum 'rehbraun')
-Silver spikegrass (Spodiopogon sibericus)
-Sacaton Grass (Sporobolus wrightii)
–Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum')

And many more out there. Happy gardening!
