Star Magnolia Blooming!

libbybu@ asks:

Question

Due to the drought, my star magnolia has dropped many leaves but yesterday, I noticed it is actually blooming which normally happens only in spring before any leaves appear. What is going on??? I am in Kansas City, by the way.

Answer

Leaf drop during a time of drought is a common response for trees, it's away to reduce the amount of water lost through transpiration. The odd flowering is nothing to be concerned about the plant is most likely a little confused from the drought. I would give the tree some supplemental water to insure the stress does not turn into die back.

Definition:
Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere.
