Citronella grass is a coarse, clumping tropical grass, the stems are canelike and the leaves are grayish green. Citronella grass is perennial in USDA zones 10-12, in cooler climates it can be grown as an annual, plant after the ground has warmed. Prefers a long, warm growing season, and regular water in well drained soil. Plant near patios or a long walk ways to enjoy the fragrance. Often referred to as the "mosquito plant" because of its use in natural insect repellents, used in the garden however it has little effect when trying to repel mosquitos. Also referred to as Citronella winterianus or Cymbopogon winterianus
