Cats digging in pot plants

meredith laing asks:

Question

I have put a layer of stones on pot plant to prevent cat getting in it but I find the water doesnt go past the stones, do I need to put a larger amount of water?

Answer

It's not the amount of water that is causing the problem it's the water. Water molecules really, really like each other and to the water molecules the movement between two types of substrate becomes a barrier because they do not want to release their bonds and move into the soil. Your best bet is to make the transition from stones to soil more gradual, integrating the soil and stones. The other option is to use much larger stones that don't have the holding capacity.

Hope this helps!
